the gift that keeps on giving, isn't it? >> that's right. mitt romney has shown us that the 47% can actually be the 1% -- or rather the 1% can be the 47%. when you look at how he has been able to shelter tens of millions of dollars in income, he probably has an interest right now in 12 different entities that are worth somewhere in the range of $30 million in cayman islands and other overseas -- >> bermuda, switzerland. >> and elsewhere. and you look at why these things are ripping taxpayers off to the tune of about $100 billion a year. it's because the rules on passive income like dividend and interest are different. the rules on deductions are totally different. the rules on unrelated business expenses where he has a lot -- some people say between somewhere between $30 million and $100 million in his i.r.a. which has shelters from taxes and you have to use qis, qualified intervenors for the irs. the irs can't even get basic information about the investment. you have all these questions about how did he have $3 million in foreign income in the year 2009 and paid i believe it was 20

, a leopard sure can try. mitt romney is sure going to try. but you're right, i mean, the polls show it. he has a steep hill to climb in terms of changing the narrative, in term of bringing people to his side, in term of maybe tightening the polls with the president. when you have the 47% video out there, when you have other comments out there such as, i'm not very concerned about poor people or i like firing -- i like being able to fire people who provide services to me, it sets up this image of a person who really is not like us. the us -- by the us i mean, not just the 47%, but the 99% of the folks who don't get to live in the way mitt romney has been able to live as a very wealthy man. again, there's nothing wrong with being a very wealthy man. there is something wrong about a person running for the president of the united states who the voters feel like they can't relate to me and he can't relate to my problems, so how is he going to be able to solve them? >> john, isn't the president actually in the more vulnerable position in terms of behavior and demeanor? because the president has

. was mr. romney's performance last night really what women want? stay with us. >> but the right answer is not to have the federal government take over health care and start mandating to the providers across america telling a patient and a doctor what kind of treatment they can have. >> jerry, just remember, it's not a lie if you believe it. >>> absent from last night's debate were any issues that related particularly to just over half the voting population. that's women. and mr. romney probably thought better than to mention republicans defunding planned parenthood or mandating transvageal ultrasound probes. yet, if you listened closely, women were mentioned at every turn. >> i was in dayton, ohio, and a woman grabbed my arp and she said, i have been out of work since may. can you help me? yesterday was a rally in denver, and a woman came up to her with a baby in her arms. a woman came to me and she said, look, i can't afford insurance for myself or my son. >> joining us here in new york is my colleague crist yal ball, one of the mosts of "the cycle" and joy reid, managing eder to of t

right, if mitt romney were to hit the president with a line, you didn't build it, he would be helping the campaign for the president? >> it's also long in the tooth as an attack line. >> just a bit. >> and they've played it out. and it was taken out of context. it actually gives the president an opening to say that he was talking about rebuilding roads and bridges and things are quite popular with the american public. i don't think that would be a smart line of attack. i doubt he'll do it. i think he would try to position himself in the center and make it seem as if he's been a moderate republican all along. he need those independent voters in order to win this election, martin. i think we'll watch him attack the center on immigration, on job creation, all kinds -- taxation. all kinds of issues that might give him a fighting chance of getting back into this race. >> we'll have to fight a helicopter just above us. richard, romney's bigger problem is his 47% remark. the numbers in the new nbc poll are simply awful for romney. can you do anything in five weeks to negate their impact? >>

effective that apology to the 47% is going to be. >> right. michelle, another number mitt romney is not fond of talking about is 7.8%, the new unemployment figure. here is how he spun that into bad news earlier today. listen to this. >> the reason it's come down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. if you just drop out altogether, why, you're no longer part of the employment statistics so it looks like unemployment is getting better. >> i have never seen a man lie with such skill. i mean, that number had been in decline until today. it's the highest it's been since may 2010, and it hasn't been higher since august 2009, and yet he goes out there and he says something that is a blatant untruth. i mean, he's apologized last night for making a mistake or apologized for something on the 47% and then today back to his old ways. here is another lie. >> well, it's necessary. the conventional wisdom has been if the unemployment rate dropped below 8%, then obama was pretty much in the cat bird seat and now it has, and the republicans have

certainly are up for grabs because mitt romney has squandered a serious purchase on his right wing constituency, gotten through paul ryan, and now i think his wife is saying the kind of mental toughness that obama has displayed may be elusive for him. paul ryan, on the other hand, is trying to say inarticulate? i don't think mitt romney said he was inarticulate -- >> he said he was being inelegant. that's different than inarticulate. >> despite his mental fragility, romney is going to be prepared. "the new york times," romney's team has clon cluded that debates are about creating moments and has equipped him with a series of zingers that he has memoried and have been practicing on aides since august. those lucky aides. >> here how governor perry was trying to have a moment and he couldn't remember the three agencies that he wanted to cut? i mean, the thing about trying to practice, you know, certain words and phrases that you intend to say is, a, making sure that you use them or deploy them at the right moment, and then, b, making sure you actually remember the whole thing and that
